WINNIPEG – Manitoba RCMP say almost all front-line officers are now equipped with body cameras as part of a program launched over a year ago.

Assistant Commissioner Scott McMurchy says the initiative has been beneficial, with about 175,000 videos, audio statements, documents and other items captured on the cameras.

McMurchy says footage related to two police shootings was also sent to the Independent Investigation Unit, which investigates police forces across Manitoba.

He says body camera footage can help the unit do its work faster, and footage is also provided to Crown attorneys who share with defence lawyers when charges are laid.

Winnipeg has been looking at adopting body cameras for its municipal police force, but city council has cited concerns over the cost.

McMurchy says there are ongoing discussions about releasing raw footage publicly more often, but there are privacy concerns for people in the video and releases are vetted by the Privacy Commissioner of Canada.
