TORONTO – Police say a tent fire in Toronto’s west end that sent a woman to hospital with life-threatening injuries appears to be suspicious.
Toronto police say officers responded to a call from a passerby about a dispute between a male and a female and an assault in the area of Lake Shore Boulevard and Eighth Street around 10:40 a.m. on Tuesday.
Duty Insp. Peter Wallace says police found a woman on fire inside a tent that was engulfed in flames when they arrived.
Wallace says the victim, who is in her 50s, received medical attention at the scene and she was rushed to a hospital with life-threatening injuries.
He says one officer sustained minor injuries to his hands after pulling the victim out of the tent, and he was released from the hospital after being treated.
The fire occurred next to an abandoned building.
Investigators couldn’t confirm whether the reported assault and the fire were connected, saying they are looking to speak with witnesses to determine what happened.
Wallace said police are trying to identify a woman who was seen walking away from the area around the time of the incident.
“And we’re working to determine who she is and whether she may have information that could help us understand what occurred here today,” he told reporters at the scene.
