York Region police say a man is facing five years in prison and a 15-year driving ban after fatally hitting a teenager with his car last year and then falsely reporting a carjacking.
Police say they were called to the scene near Martin Grove Road and Jackman Crescent in Vaughan, Ont., just before 11 p.m., on May 21, 2024.
They say a 16-year-old was riding a bike when they were fatally struck by a Mercedes-Benz.
Police say they were then called to a nearby location shortly after the crash where the male driver of the Mercedes-Benz reported that his vehicle had been carjacked, which investigators later determined to be false.
They say the man was identified as the driver in the hit-and-run, and in September 2025 he pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing death, failing to stop after an accident causing death and public mischief.
Police say the driver, a 25-year-old man from Vaughan, was handed his prison sentence and driving ban on Monday.
