SAINT-EUSTACHE – Two people are dead after an apartment fire in Saint-Eustache, in the Laurentians, about 20 kilometres northwest of Montreal.

The victims were two adult brothers, whose identities have not been released.

The fire broke out in the six-unit building on Corbo Street late Saturday. The 911 call was received at 11:11 p.m.

“We called in 30 firefighters, including four from neighbouring towns, to respond quickly,” said Sébastien Laplante, director of the Saint-Eustache Fire Department, in an interview with The Canadian Press. “During the operation, we pulled two people out who were in cardiac arrest.”

The two men were treated by paramedics and transported to the hospital.

Lapalnte said they learned early Sunday both men had died.

He also confirmed the fire started in one of the basement apartments, but the victims were found in a second-floor unit.

The building was evacuated, and it was not clear when the occupants would be able to return to their homes. The extent of the damage has yet to be assessed.

“All the people in the apartments have been relocated by the Red Cross,” said Laplante, noting some occupants were away visiting family.

An investigation by the coroner and the Saint-Eustache Police Department will try to determine what led to the fire.
