CHARLOTTETOWN – Fire crews on Prince Edward Island say tragedy has struck in Charlottetown after two people were killed and three more were sent to hospital following a weekend blaze.

The Charlottetown Fire Department says crews were called Sunday to a multi-unit residential building on Green Street, near the city’s downtown.

Fire officials confirmed in a social media post that the blaze resulted in two fatalities and three other people were taken to hospital, but their conditions are not known.

A number of residents were also displaced and are being cared for by the Red Cross.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.

Residents were asked to avoid the area while the investigation was taking place.
