CASTLEGAR – Police in British Columbia say a Castlegar search and rescue team airlifted an injured snowmobiler to safety on Friday.

B.C. RCMP say emergency services learned the 21-year-old Grand Forks resident was hurt while riding in the Goose Creek area, north of Castlegar in the southeast Interior, around 1 p.m.

The police statement says the rider sent an electronic message by satellite phone to a friend who called emergency services.

The message included GPS co-ordinates for the rider and said he was receiving first aid from a friend who was riding with him.

Police say that because of the remote location, Castlegar Search and Rescue sent a team to the injured rider and gave him first aid at the scene.

The rider was airlifted to an ambulance and taken to hospital, where he is expected to make a full recovery.

Three days earlier, a snowmobiler died in a separate incident in the B.C. Rockies, when a group was caught in an avalanche.

Avalanche Canada says much of the B.C. Interior, including the Castlegar area, remains at considerable avalanche risk amid flurries and unsettled weather.
