Police in Niagara Region say a man accused of shooting an officer after a nearly 24-hour standoff in Welland, Ont., last month is now facing additional charges, including six counts of attempted murder with a firearm.

Police say they were called to the scene near Plymouth Road and Second Street the morning of Dec. 19 and were met with gunfire while helping bylaw officers deal with a “fencing issue” around what is believed to be an old church converted into a home.

Police say an officer was shot in the chest and later released from hospital with minor injuries, and officers issued a shelter-in-place order in the area.

Police say the suspect, 59-year-old Daniel Tronko, was arrested and initially charged with attempted murder and three firearm-related offences after a nearly 24-hour standoff with police.

Police now say Tronko is facing six counts of attempted murder with a firearm, six counts of discharging a firearm with intent and two counts of recklessly discharging a firearm, among other offences.

Tronko is scheduled to appear in court later this month.
