HALIFAX – Nova Scotia’s independent police watchdog is investigating after Halifax police shot a man while responding to a robbery report.
Halifax Regional Police say they responded to a call of a robbery in progress at a liquor store on Grafton Street on Saturday afternoon, and then a second liquor store on Quinpool Road 40 minutes later, for another report of a robbery.
Police say at each store a man sprayed a sensory irritant like pepper spray.
When officers found the suspect on Quinpool Road and attempted to arrest him, they say he threatened officers with a large knife.
Police say they used a stun gun on the man to get him to drop the knife, but it didn’t work.
That’s when they say an officer fired their weapon, hitting the 37-year-old man, who was transported to hospital with life-threatening injuries.
