INNISFAIL – Mounties in Alberta say one of their officers is in hospital after an SUV rammed an unmarked police car on the side of a highway.

RCMP say the officer was investigating a crash near the town of Innisfail, south of Red Deer, on Thursday night and went back to his cruiser to finish paperwork.

While doing so, they say a white Ford Explorer slammed into the RCMP car, causing significant damage.

The officer was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries and remains hospitalized for testing and treatment.

Mounties say the 26-year-old driver of the SUV was allegedly impaired by alcohol and a breath test showed she was nearly double the legal limit.

The accused faces impaired driving charges and is to appear in court next week.
