CALGARY – Police in Calgary say they’ve made their second arrest this week in their ongoing investigation into extortion targeting members and businesses in the South Asian community.

Since January 2025, there have been 41 reported extortion attempts in Calgary and police say 18 of the incidents involved shootings at homes, businesses or vehicles.

Police say the latest arrest stems from a traffic stop on March 7 which happened when they allege a vehicle committed a traffic violation, and officers recognized it as matching a suspect vehicle in an extortion-related shooting days earlier.

Over the following weeks, police say investigators analyzed evidence collected during the traffic stop, and a 21-year-old Calgary man is now charged with discharging a firearm with intent.

Earlier this week police also announced a 45-year-old Calgary man was charged with extortion and uttering threats, after police said a series of escalating incidents happened in March.

Police say there have been no reported injuries in Calgary associated with the crimes to date.
