FREDERICTON – Police in New Brunswick’s capital are reporting a dramatic spike in drug overdoses so far this year.
The Fredericton Police Force says officers have responded to 61 overdoses since January — up from 27 overdoses over the same period last year.
Police say recent numbers highlight a concerning upward trend.
There were 162 reported overdoses in 2025, nine of which were fatal; 97 in 2024 with eight fatal; and 54 in 2023, three of which were fatal.
As well, police said they had responded to nine overdose calls in the last 48 hours.
Investigators say the overdoses are linked to the supply of illicit drugs in the community.
This report by The Canadian Press was first published April 23, 2026.
