HAMILTON – Police say a 14-year-old boy wanted in a deadly Ontario mall shooting is now in custody.

Hamilton Police issued a news release Sunday evening stating that the teen had turned himself in.

The shooting Friday took place inside Jackson Square mall in Hamilton, where police had said two teens were observed running from the scene while the victim, a 16-year-old, walked towards a store and collapsed.

The 16-year-old victim died later in hospital.

Police have said the teens interacted with each other outside the mall, leading to an altercation inside that culminated in the shooting.

Investigators say they have now spoken to everyone involved in the altercation and are not looking for any more suspects.

“Our community continues to grieve the loss of a 16-year-old whose life was cut short in an act of senseless violence. The fact that another young person is alleged to be responsible is deeply troubling. This is not just a police matter — it is a community call to action,” said Chief Frank Bergen in the news release.

“We should all be concerned when violence becomes an option for youth instead of resolution and hope.”

Investigators continue to appeal to anyone who may have witnessed the incident to contact police.
