MONTREAL – Montreal police say they arrested more than a dozen demonstrators Friday evening at a downtown protest on International Workers’ Day.
A spokesman says officers carried out at least 13 arrests during the May Day rally organized by a group claiming to represent a coalition of activist, labour and community groups.
In a post to its website, the anti-capitalist group known by the acronym CLAC called for solidarity against forces and legislation it deemed “anti-union, racist, transphobic (and) anti-feminist.”
Montreal police spokesman Manuel Couture says officers carried out arrests after demonstrators allegedly threw projectiles at police and a “pyrotechnic device” at bystanders.
He says officers then dispersed the protesters with tactics that included “chemical irritants,” which can include tear gas and pepper spray.
Nearby, thousands of fans had gathered outside the Bell Centre to watch Game 6 of the playoff series between the Montreal Canadiens and the Tampa Bay Lightning. Despite a heartbreaking overtime loss for the Canadiens, police said there were no incidents to report.
