SURREY – A foreign national with no status in Canada has been arrested in Surrey, B.C., over a shooting last month that’s believed to be linked to extortion.

Surrey police say the Canada Border Services Agency has been told about the arrest of 27-year-old Jaskaran Saroye.

Saroye has been charged with reckless discharging of a firearm and remains in police custody, with a court date next Tuesday.

The shooting happened early on April 13, when police responded to a report of shots fired at a home near 94A Avenue and 127 Street in Surrey.

Officers say the home was damaged by gunfire but no one inside was injured.

Surrey’s extortion response team obtained a search warrant for a home in the city after a suspect vehicle was identified, and tactical police teams arrested Saroye.

The city has been among the hardest hit in Canada by extortion violence targeting the South Asian community, with police reporting 96 extortions this year, as of Monday, with 16 involving gunfire.

This report by The Canadian Press was first published May 7, 2026.
