SYDNEY RIVER – A 13-year-old Cape Breton boy accused of placing a 911 call and falsely claiming he had been shot is facing a mischief charge.

Cape Breton Regional Police say they received a call Wednesday morning from someone who said they had been shot and then hung up.

The police force says dispatch operators determined the call had come from the gym at Malcolm Munroe Memorial Middle School in Sydney River.

Staff at the school were alerted and a lockdown was ordered as officers were sent to the school.

When a dispatcher dialed the number of the 911 caller, they were told there was no emergency.

Meanwhile, officers at the scene cleared the gym, searched the school and found the owner of the phone in a classroom, where students confirmed the 911 call was false.

One youth was arrested and later released from custody on the condition they appear in Sydney provincial court to face a charge of mischief for interfering with the lawful use of property.
