SURREY – Homicide investigators and British Columbia’s police watchdog have been called in to investigate after a stabbing in Surrey, B.C., left one person dead and another injured, and led to a police-involved shooting of the suspect.

The Integrated Homicide Investigation Team says officers with the Surrey Police Service responded to reports of an assault around 1 p.m. on Friday and found two people suffering from stab wounds.

It says a 55-year-old man died of his injuries at the scene despite life-saving efforts, while the second victim — a 35-year-old woman — was brought to hospital for treatment.

IHIT says officers found the stabbing suspect nearby and the interaction ended with shots being fired by police.

It says the 65-year-old man was transported to the hospital but later died of his injuries.

The release says IHIT was dispatched, while the Independent Investigations Office was also notified and is looking into police actions in the case.

Though the motivation behind the stabbings is still under investigation, IHIT says police believe the man who was shot by police was responsible for both stabbings and there are no outstanding suspects.

The release also says anyone with information about the attack is asked to contact IHIT.

Police say the 55-year-old stabbing victim who died in the attack lived in the same building as the suspect, while investigators believe the surviving victim was in the vicinity of the building.

“Though the alleged suspect is now deceased, IHIT will continue a fulsome investigation into the sequence of events in hopes of uncovering the motivation and sequence of events behind what appears to be an unprovoked attack,” Sgt. Freda Fong of IHIT says in the release.

“We extend our thoughts to the family members of the deceased as well as the surviving victim.”
