MERRITT, BRITISH COLUMBIA – Police say one person has been killed in a head-on crash involving a vehicle that had been travelling the wrong way on the Coquihalla Highway south of Merritt, B.C., where the route remained closed several hours after the crash.
RCMP say they received a report of a small car travelling in the wrong direction on the highway near Comstock Road around 8 a.m. on Monday.
A few minutes later, a second report to police indicated the car had been involved in a crash with a transport van, prompting a response from Merritt RCMP, BC Highway Patrol, paramedics and local fire crews.
Police say the driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene, while the van’s occupants were taken to hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
The Mounties say initial witness reports suggest the car was speeding southbound in the northbound lanes prior to the crash.
Police say anyone who may have dash-camera footage from the area around the time of the crash is asked to contact the Merritt RCMP detachment.
