FREDERICTON – A former police officer in New Brunswick who was facing criminal charges has died.
“It is with sadness that the Fredericton Police Force has learned of the passing of former Constable Andy Savoy,” the police service said in a statement Thursday.
“We extend our sincere condolences to his family and friends, many of whom were also his colleagues within our organization.”
Savoy was charged Tuesday with perjury, uttering forged documents and breach of trust.
“We recognize the impact of this news and that it may be felt deeply across our policing community,” the police service said in the statement.
“Out of respect for the family, we will not be commenting further on the matter.”
Fredericton police did not reveal the cause of death and referred questions about the case to the Crown prosecutor.
Earlier in the week, Fredericton police said they found inconsistencies in Savoy’s files during an internal audit, but the force did not give further details.
Police had said the charges were the result of an independent investigation into his files by the Miramichi Police Force, led by deputy chief Randy Hansen.
When reached by phone Thursday, police in Marimichi, N.B., about 170 kilometres northeast of Fredericton, declined to provide more information about the case.
Fredericton police had also referred the matter to the New Brunswick Police Commission for investigation. But the commission lost jurisdiction and closed its own case after Savoy resigned from the force earlier this year.
The allegations were never tested in court.
Savoy is alleged to have committed the crimes between 2023 and January 2026, while he was employed with Fredericton police.
He was scheduled to appear in court on Aug. 28.
