NIAGARA-ON-THE-LAKE – Police say a cyclist died in Niagara-on-the-Lake after they were struck by a vehicle whose driver allegedly fled the scene and did not report the collision.
The Niagara Regional Police Service says officers eventually located the 22-year-old driver and he now faces charges of impaired driving causing death and failing to stop after an accident.
Police say they received reports of a cyclist struck by a vehicle and arrived at the scene shortly before midnight on Friday in the area of Concession Road 6 near Line 4 Road, a rural area near the Niagara District Airport.
When officers arrived, police say they confirmed the cyclist had suffered fatal injuries and the vehicle involved was gone.
Police say their investigation led them to another location in Niagara-on-the-Lake where they arrested the 22-year-old suspect and seized his car.
Police say the investigation into the crash is ongoing and are asking any witnesses or anyone who may have footage from the area to contact authorities.
