ST. JOHN’S – Police in St. John’s, N.L., have used an aerial drone to catch an alleged arsonist in the act.
The Royal Newfoundland Constabulary says officers were using a drone for additional patrols of the Cochrane Pond area this morning.
On the outskirts of the city, Cochrane Pond has been the site of a number of recent fires, including four on Saturday alone, according to radio station VOCM.
Around 8:15 a.m. officers used the drone to spot a man allegedly setting fire to a vehicle.
Police kept an eye on the suspect with the drone while officers on the ground found and arrested him.
The 52-year-old was held in custody and is set to appear in court for arson charges.
