Durham Regional Police say one of their recruits died and another was seriously injured in a crash near the Ontario Police College in southwestern Ontario.

Chief Peter Moreira says he is mourning “a profound loss” following the crash that occurred Tuesday in Malahide Township.

Moreira says in a statement that the two constables in training were travelling to a training session at the time.

He says the news that one of them died and the other remains in life-threatening condition is being shared with “deep sadness.”

“During this difficult time, our focus is on supporting the families of our CITs, as well as their classmates, instructors, friends and members of our service who are grieving this tragic loss,” Moreira said.

“We will continue to ensure they receive the care and support they need.”

He added that no further details will be provided at this time as the investigation by the Ontario Provincial Police continues.

OPP say the fatal crash involved a sedan and a transport truck.

Ontario Premier Doug Ford and OPP Commissioner Thomas Carrique each expressed condolences on social media.

In his post, Carrique referenced Tuesday’s public memorial for Mohamed Lamine Benredouane, a Montreal police officer killed on the job last month.

“Following the overwhelming grief felt at today’s Montreal police funeral service, this tragic news is felt especially deeply across the policing community,” Carrique said.
