WINNIPEG – Winnipeg police say they’ve arrested a man suspected of causing more than $10 million in damage by deliberately lighting a fire at a Walmart.
Police say the 47-year old is alleged to have lit the fire in the bedding section of the store in the city’s south end on Monday evening.
They say the suspect went to the McDonald’s in the store as the fire spread, helped himself to a drink from the soda dispenser and sat down at a table.
Police say the fire grew quickly and forced upwards of 200 staff and shoppers to evacuate.
Winnipeg’s fire department said sprinklers extinguished most of the fire, and that there were no injuries reported.
Police say charges against the man include arson with disregard for human life, arson causing property damage and possession of meth.
