ASIRT investigating after man shot by RCMP officer responding to domestic call

IRRICANA – Alberta’s police watchdog is investigating after a man was shot while officers responded to a domestic disturbance call at a rural home northeast of Calgary.

The Alberta Serious Incident Response Team says two officers went to a home near Irricana last Friday after RCMP received a call from a woman reporting a domestic disturbance involving her boyfriend. 

ASIRT says as the officers approached the home, they heard yelling from inside before the woman came out the front door.

The agency says officers stayed outside near the entrance and called out to the man to come outside.

He did not respond and, minutes later, came out and began walking toward the officers holding what appeared to be a handgun.

ASIRT says one officer fired his service pistol multiple times, striking the man.

The officers provided first aid and called for emergency medical services, but ASIRT says paramedics pronounced the man dead at the scene.

The agency says the shooting was captured on both officers’ body-worn cameras.

ASIRT says its investigation will examine the use of force by police.
