Police in Hamilton are investigating after two young people were killed in a shooting early Wednesday morning in the Stoney Creek area.
Police said officers responded to reports of gunshots in the complex of 191 Candlewood Drive around 2:25 a.m.
They said two young people were found with gunshot wounds.
Police said the two victims were taken to hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
The victims have been identified as 18-year-old Abdulmalek Shibli and 16-year-old Afef Binafif, both from Hamilton. The victims’ families are devastated and are asking for privacy, police said.
Investigators said they believe at least six people went to the area, and an exchange of gunfire took place.
The investigation is in its early stages, police said, adding they believe the shooting may have been retaliation for an earlier disturbance involving bear spray at a home in Hamilton’s east end.
Police are asking anyone with information to contact them.
