MONTRÉAL – Two people have died and another is in critical condition after a vehicle allegedly attempted to flee from police and crashed into a gym north of Montreal.
Laval police say officers tried to stop the car after it was spotted without a licence plate at around 1:20 a.m.
Spokesperson Laurent Arsenault says officers abandoned their attempt to intercept the vehicle after it accelerated drastically.
Police say the driver lost control further down the road before crashing into a fitness centre, killing the driver and sending two passengers to hospital.
A 19-year-old female passenger died, while police said the life of a 19-year-old man is in danger. No details were provided on the driver.
The street was closed to traffic while investigators, including accident reconstruction specialists and crime scene technicians, worked to determine the causes and circumstances of the collision.
