MISSISSAUGA – Ontario’s police watchdog says it’s investigating after a 19-year-old man was fatally shot by Toronto police early Thursday morning.
The Special Investigations Unit says the man was driving a vehicle tracked by police to Mississauga as part of an investigation.
The SIU initially said the vehicle had been reported stolen, but in an update later Thursday said it had been followed in connection to a firearms investigation.
The watchdog says shortly after midnight three unmarked police vehicles collided with the vehicle carrying four people.
It says one officer fired into the vehicle and hit the driver, who died at the scene.
The SIU says three other people in the vehicle were not injured and have been taken into custody. It says two other guns were found at the scene.
The watchdog agency says another Toronto police officer was taken to hospital to be treated for minor injuries after the collision.
Peel regional police say there are no other suspects.
