FORT SMITH – RCMP in Fort Smith, N.W.T, have lifted a shelter-in-place order about 15 hours after responding to a call for three people injured in a shooting.
Mounties say the call came at around 2 a.m. Saturday and they responded to an area outside a business in the town’s west end.
An armed man fled the scene and police issued a shelter-in-place order soon after.
Locals were asked to stay inside and not open the door for anyone.
Police now say the incident was a targeted attack and the risk to the public is over.
They said in a previous update that the victims were receiving medical attention.
This report by The Canadian Press was first published Aug. 22, 2026.
