RCMP in New Brunswick say a man said to be in mental distress was killed on Wednesday after an exchange of gunfire with police in Maltempec, N.B.
Officers were responding to a report of an armed man in distress when he fired at police, the Mounties said in a news release Thursday. The man refused to drop his weapon and co-operate.
“As the situation evolved, members discharged their firearms towards the man,” the news release said. “First aid was immediately administered, however the man died at the scene.”
The Serious Incident Response Team, or SIRT, confirmed the man was struck by gunfire from at least one officer and that it was investigating after visiting the scene.
SIRT has a mandate to investigate death, serious injury and other matters involving police.
Maltempec is a community of about 300 people on New Brunswick’s Acadian Peninsula, in the northeast of the province.
