SURREY – British Columbia’s police watchdog says it’s looking for witnesses after a Surrey police vehicle was involved in a crash with a pickup truck that ran into a concrete SkyTrain barrier, injuring the driver and leaving a pedestrian with serious injuries.

The Independent Investigations Office of BC says the crash happened around 3 a.m. Monday after officers tried to stop the pickup truck near King George Blvd. and 96 Ave.

The civilian agency says the driver of the pickup didn’t stop for police and ended up crashing into the barrier after colliding with a police vehicle.

It says both the pickup driver and the pedestrian were taken to hospital, and the Surrey Police Service notified the IIO shortly after the crash occurred.

Police say the pedestrian is in hospital with life-threatening injuries, while the driver was left with serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

IIO investigators say they’re looking for witnesses and any video footage of the crash, and anyone with information is asked to contact the IIO by phone or email.
