FORT ERIE – Military Time overtook Brachetto just before the wire to claim the $500,000 Prince of Wales Stakes on Monday.
Jockeyed by 22-year-old Fraser Aebly, Military Time raced in third for most of the way before surging past Brachetto and Keepmypowderdry near the finish at the Fort Erie Racetrack.
“He was fighting for me the whole race, it was crazy,” said a jubilant Aebly after the race.
The second jewel in the Canadian Triple Crown, this year’s Prince of Wales Stakes had fans on the edge of their seats right to the last second. The field of eight stuck close together, but there were three across the front at the top of the stretch all fighting for the lead. Military Time, Brachetto and Keepmypowderdry were all fair contenders, but it was Military Time who found the extra speed and proved best, winning in 1.56.
“He jumped away good at the gate, and I knew I wanted to be forwardly placed because of how the track has been playing today. We found our position and he settled beautifully for me,” said Aebly. “I knew the one inside me at the quarter pole was quickening pretty good too, but I knew I had enough horse to keep my position, and he kept running.”
Military Time, runner-up to filly Luster in last month’s $1-million King’s Plate at Toronto’s Woodbine Racetrack, was installed as the early 2-1 favourite for the Prince of Wale Stakes earlier this week.
Brachetto finished second, while Buium was third. Keepmypowderdry fell to fourth in the eight-horse field.
Luster did not run in the Prince of Wales, leaving Wando as the last horse to win Canada’s Triple Crown in 2003.
The third and final jewel of the Canadian Triple Crown is the Breeders’ Stakes, which will be run Sept. 27 at Woodbine.
