No. 23 Missouri beats Kansas 38-21 in the Border War

LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) — Austin Simmons threw for 292 yards and three touchdowns, Robert Woodyard Jr. produced back-to-back second-half turnovers to help Missouri take control, and the No. 23 Tigers beat Kansas 38-21 on Friday night in the latest edition of the Border War.

Jamal Roberts ran for 125 yards and a touchdown, and Donovan Olugbode and Cayden Lee caught TD passes, helping the Tigers (2-0) beat their biggest rival for the fifth straight time in their first trip across the state line since Oct. 29, 2005.

It was tied 14-all early in the second half when Woodyard fell on Kansas quarterback Isaiah Marshall’s fumble, and Simmons quickly found Olugbode for the go-ahead touchdown. On the Jayhawks’ next offensive play, Woodyard faded into the secondary and was there to pick off Marshall’s pass, setting up Xai’Shaun Edwards’ touchdown run.

Marshall finished with 168 yards passing, two touchdowns and two interceptions for the Jayhawks (1-1), who haven’t beaten Missouri since Nov. 29, 2008. The sophomore quarterback also carried 20 times for just 23 yards.

Kansas jumped on the Tigers early, just as it did last season in Columbia, when a series that went on hiatus after the Tigers’ departure for the SEC finally resumed after more than a decade. This time around, the Jayhawks capitalized on Missouri miscues: four false start penalties in the first half alone, blown blocking assignments and two blocked field-goal attempts.

On the second block, the Jayhawks’ Austin Alexander scooped up the ball and ran 88 yards for the first points of the game.

Roberts, once more taking center stage for the Tigers with All-American Ahmad Hardy rehabbing after a gunshot wound earlier this year, quickly provided an answer, jetting over the right side for a 64-yard touchdown run. It was the longest of his career, eclipsing a 63-yarder that Roberts scored with 1:49 to go to clinch last year’s 42-31 victory over the Jayhawks.

The teams traded touchdowns late in the first half, sending the 122nd edition of the Border War to the break tied 14-all.

But two big plays by Woodyards and the Missouri defense tilted the game in their favor, and after Marshall found Nahzae Cox to get Kansas to 28-21 late in the third quarter, the Tigers’ Blake Craig added a field goal to help them regain control.

NO. 24 LOUISVILLE 59, VILLANOVA 13

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (AP) — Lincoln Kienholz threw for 332 yards and two touchdowns and ran for two more scores to help Louisville beat Villanova for its first victory of the season.

The Ohio State transfer missed on his first two passes, then little else, as he led the Cardinals (1-1) to an easy victory over their Football Championship Subdivision guests. He completed 16 of 21 passes and gained 42 yards on six carries before exiting the game after three quarters with Louisville up 45-13.

Louisville had 635 yards of offense and held the Wildcats (1-2) to 253, with just 126 coming after the first minute of the second quarter.

Kienholz put Louisville up for good with his 19-yard touchdown run with 4:33 left in the opening quarter, making it 10-3. He added a 69-yard pass to Jaleel Skinner with 14 seconds left in the period. Lawayne McCoy caught three passes for 102 yards, including a 61-yard touchdown strike from Kienholz with 13:24 left in the first half.

Pat McQuaide completed 18 of 31 passes for 166 yards and a touchdown for the Wildcats, but connected on just four of his last 14 attempts.

NO. 25 VIRGINIA 59, NORFOLK STATE 3

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. (AP) — Beau Pribula threw three first-quarter touchdown passes, and Virginia rolled to a win over Norfolk State.

Jacquon Gibson caught scoring tosses of 30 and 6 yards and Ty’Liric Coleman, Da’Shawn Martin, Isaiah Robinson and Hayden Rollison also hauled in touchdown catches for the Cavaliers (2-0). After rushing for 258 yards against N.C. State in its opener, Virginia threw for 229 yards and six scores.

Coach Tony Elliott’s Cavaliers exacted a measure of revenge on former Virginia Tech quarterback Michael Vick, now Norfolk State’s coach. Vick led the Hokies to wins over Virginia in 1999 and 2000 by a combined score of 73-28.

Deljay Bailey threw interceptions on the Spartans’ first two drives and finished 15 for 25 for 152 yards.

Pribula went 12 of 14 for 162 yards before yielding to backups Eli Holstein and Cole Geer. Holstein, a Pittsburgh transfer, threw for two scores.

Reserve linebacker Justin Rowe capped the scoring with a 50-yard interception return for a touchdown with 4:17 left in the game.
