MONCTON – Sharone Vernon-Evans and Eric Loeppky each had a match-high 14 points as Canada advanced to the final of the NORCECA men’s continental volleyball championship with a 3-0 win over Cuba on Tuesday.
Set scores were 26-24, 25-22 and 22-17 as the Canadians set up a showdown with either the United States or the Dominican Republic in Wednesday’s final.
Stephen Maar added 13 points for Canada, which outscored Cuba 39-31 on attack points, 8-6 on blocks and 9-3 on serves.
Alejandro Gonzalez led Cuba with 12 points.
“It was a bit of a weird game, they didn’t play some of their top guys,” Canada captain Loeppky said. “I think we really had to force ourselves mentally to play well and finish in three sets, so I’m super proud of us for that.”
Tuesday’s win earned Canada a berth at the 2027 FIVB Volleyball Men’s World Cup in Poland.
The tournament will also determine the teams that advance to next weekend’s final NORCECA qualification stage for the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
“I’m really happy for the guys. They win 3-0 against a good team, even though Cuba is managing their lineup and resting some of their players,” said Canada head coach Dan Lewis. “This is a really high-quality team that we defeated tonight and it was a focused effort. It was a good second goal of the tournament.
“We qualify for World Cup – it’s good to take a moment for happiness and pride, and then it’s a quick reset to play the finals.”
