No. 13 Texas Tech survives No. 22 Houston as a late 2-point try comes up short

LUBBOCK, Texas (AP) — J’Koby Williams and Cameron Dickey ran for second-half touchdowns and defending Big 12 champion No. 13 Texas Tech held on for a 28-26 on Friday night when No. 22 Houston quarterback Conner Weigman came up just short of a 2-point conversion in the final minute.

Weigman’s third TD pass, a 10-yarder to Patrick Overmyer with 49 seconds left, gave the Cougars (2-1, 0-1) a chance to tie in the conference opener for both teams. On the try for 2, Weigman took off to the left and lunged forward with the ball extended, though his knee came down before the ball broke the plane of the end zone.

Will Hammond was 17-of-27 passing for 257 yards and a touchdown for the Red Raiders (3-0, 1-0), who were down 10-0 with just one offensive snap only 9 1/2 minutes into their first Friday home game since 1941.

Weigman finished 27 of 38 for 282 yards.

After only two carries for 5 yards before halftime, Williams had consecutive runs of 19, 5 and 29 yards — the last a burst through the left side and pretty much untouched to the end zone to make it 21-17 only 2 1/2 minutes into the second half. Dickey had a 1-yard scoring run with 7:36 left.

No. 5 MIAMI 33, WAKE FOREST 20

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. (AP) — Darian Mensah connected on his first 24 passes on the way to setting Atlantic Coast Conference records for consecutive completions, and Miami’s defense came up with four straight fourth-quarter stops to beat Wake Forest.

Mensah completed 30 of 34 passes for 220 yards and three touchdowns, including a 9-yarder to Joshua Moore on the game’s first possession and a perfect-execution throw back to the left side on Elija Lofton’s 21-yard score.

Menah added a short TD throw to star sophomore receiver Malachi Toney as Miami (3-0, 2-0) took a 31-7 lead midway through the third quarter, only to see its prolific offense grind to an abrupt halt with four straight three-and-outs while seeing multiple players get banged up.

That ultimately gave the Hurricanes’ defense its chance to step up as Wake Forest tried to rally.

Gio Lopez threw for 312 yards and three touchdowns for the Demon Deacons (2-1, 0-1), including a perfect throw to the back right corner of the end zone for Carlos Hernandez on a 17-yard strike that pulled Wake Forest to 31-20 with 14:56 left.

But from there, Miami’s defense pressured Lopez in the end zone to draw a holding penalty for a safety. Then, after Wake Forest drove all the way to the Miami 13, the Hurricanes again pressured Lopez into an inaccurate throw on fourth down in the end zone.

NO. 21 OREGON 84, PORTLAND STATE 0

EUGENE (AP) — Dante Moore threw for 280 yards and four touchdowns and Oregon followed a stunning upset at Oklahoma State last weekend with a romp over Portland State.

The victory, coach Dan Lanning’s 50th in 59 games at Oregon (2-1) was the 40th in the Ducks’ nation-leading active nonconference home winning streak and the third-largest margin of victory in school history.

Portland State (0-4) has lost seven consecutive games dating to its 1-11 2025 season.

Portland State quarterback Gabe Downing was 8 for 20 for 101 yards and threw three second-half interceptions — two to Ducks freshman Jett Washington.

Oregon freshman Messiah Hampton entered while junior receiver Jeremiah McClellan, who led the Ducks in receiving yards through the first two games, didn’t play after warming up with the team. Hampton caught six passes for 71 yards and two touchdowns as Oregon built a 49-0 lead by halftime in what amounted to a get-right game before it enters conference play next week with a trip to No. 12 Southern California.

Oregon’s opening salvo took just 3:12 — an eight-play, 72-yard drive that ended in the first of Jordon Davison’s two touchdowns.

Davison finished with 81 yards and two touchdowns. Moore added a pair of long passing touchdowns, one to an uncovered Dakorien Moore on a busted coverage, and another down the sideline to Stewart to complete a 28-point first quarter.
