BOULDER, Colo. (AP) — Deion Sanders made a switch at quarterback Saturday night in an effort to spark a stagnant Colorado offense, inserting Isaac Wilson over highly touted prospect Julian “JuJu” Lewis.
The Buffaloes coach hinted at a switch leading into their game against No. 12 Texas Tech. Wilson, a transfer from Utah, entered the contest a week ago when Lewis struggled. Lewis, who recently turned 19, started the first four games of the season after showing promise a season ago.
Wilson quickly settled in Saturday and led the Buffaloes on a nine-play, 75-yard drive that culminated with the QB throwing an 8-yard touchdown to Joseph Williams. Wilson’s first snap as the starter wasn’t a throw but a catch. He hauled in a 7-yard pass from Kaneal Sweetwyne on a trick play.
Wilson also had a scramble for 10 yards on the drive. Wilson is the younger brother of Zach Wilson, the former standout at BYU who’s now with the New Orleans Saints.
Lewis emerged as the QB of the future last season. He showed his talent in a win over Weber State on Sept. 12. He threw for 366 yards and four TDs — he ran for another — in earning Big 12 freshman of the week honors. He was replaced at halftime in a loss at Baylor last weekend.
