BAKU, Azerbaijan (AP) — Two-time Olympic judo medalist Sarah-Léonie Cysique of France was transported to a hospital after landing on her head as a result of her opponent’s move during a semifinal bout at the world championships Tuesday.
The incident took place just seconds into her bout against Japan’s Akari Omori in the 57-kilogram category.
Cysique’s neck was stabilized in a brace before she was taken away on a stretcher, according to French sports daily L’Equipe. The extent of the injury was not immediately clear.
L’Equipe reported that Omori used a legal hip throw against Cysique, who landed on her head at the event in Azerbaijan’s capital of Baku.
In the 57-kilogram category, Cysique won bronze at the 2024 Paris Olympics and silver at the Tokyo Games held in 2021. She also won mixed team gold at both games.
