MONTREAL – A woman in her 50s has died after a fire broke out at a homeless encampment early this morning in Montreal.

Emergency services were called to the site in the Montréal-Nord borough around 5 a.m.

At the scene, police say they found an unconscious woman, who was taken to hospital in critical condition.

Firefighters were also called, but the fire was put out before they arrived. 

It remains unclear how the fire started or what caused the woman’s death.

Montreal Mayor Soraya Martinez Ferrada says the death serves as a reminder of the importance of eliminating homelessness.
