VANCOUVER – Police in Vancouver have arrested a 55-year-old man they say is a “chronic offender” and was wanted on Canada-wide warrants after failing to attend his sentencing last year over a fatal car crash.
The department says in a news release that Raymond Desorcy had pleaded guilty to dangerous driving that resulted in the death of 18-year-old Dana Oh in Vancouver in 2023.
It says officers had been looking for Desorcy since last December.
The news release says Desorcy was distracted by his cellphone when he drove through a red light and collided with a BMW sedan, seriously injuring Oh and another passenger.
It says Oh died six days later in hospital.
Police say Desorcy was arrested in the city’s downtown after leaving a coffee shop on Thursday.
He was allegedly in possession of non-prescription drugs and has been charged with breaching a release order.
They say Desorcy also has a lifetime firearms ban and more than 30 convictions dating back to 1989, including impaired driving, assault, break and enter, robbery and uttering threats.
The department says he was found guilty of seven counts of robbery in Edmonton in 2014, and released from prison in 2020.
