MOON ALERT We have the all clear today to shop and make important decisions, except for one hour from 3 p.m. to 4 p.m. After that the moon moves from Libra into Scorpio.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Don’t take it personally if someone close to you is critical. (Ha! How else can you take it?) Essentially, today there is a tendency for others to be critical, negative and discouraging. It just goes with the territory.

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Use today’s energy for routine work requiring attention to detail. As the day wears on, your imagination enters the picture and things might take on a new spin. Someone older might be keen to give you advice. (Again?)

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

You might feel unusually serious about your responsibilities to your kids today. Or perhaps, your relations with your kids are overly burdensome. Others might feel the same “weight” dealing with romantic partners, or sports events or anything in the arts. It’s no big deal, really.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Don’t let an older relative (especially a parent) discourage you about anything today. Just go along with whatever is happening. (And say as little as possible.) Today has some Eeyore aspects to it. “It will probably rain.”

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

You might fall into worry mode today. When I was a kid I had a note on the back of my bedroom door that said, “Worry is like a rocking chair. It gives you something to do but gets you nowhere.” Today I wonder what I was worried about back then. (It’s worrisome.)

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

You might feel concerned about money issues today. Namely, where is it? However, you can use your excellent powers of concentration today to get routine matters out of the way. Focus will come easily to you. Soon the money will, too.

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

It’s easy to feel cut off and lonely today. Ironically, the reason you might feel this way is you are hiding. It’s your choice to avoid others, which in turn, perpetuates the feeling that you’re lonely and unloved. This is minor stuff but it’s there. Fortunately, it’s fleeting. (Send out for dark chocolate.)

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

Instead of letting yourself disappear down the rabbit hole with feelings of self-doubt, use today’s energy to focus on boring, routine tasks. Roll up your sleeves and get to work because that will be the best way to fight the blues.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Someone older than you might be critical of your plans or ideas. (“Great! Come on over and rain on my parade!”) Don’t let this get you down. Everyone feels this in varying degrees because there’s a bummer element to today. It’s that simple. It’s also fairly inconsequential. No biggie.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Relations with authority figures will be stiff and reserved today. You might find that others are too quick to tell you why you can’t do something. (Dontcha love it?) Knowing this, postpone pitching your ideas or asking anyone for permission.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Travel plans seem to be burdensome or difficult today. If you have to study, you might feel discouraged or overwhelmed. Ironically, if you begin to study something today, you’ll be surprised at how focused your concentration is. Try it. (You have nothing to lose but your sanity.)

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

You might be disappointed that your share of something is not what you hoped for. (“This always happens to me!”) Others might feel overburdened by a sense of responsibility to someone or something. Fortunately, these feelings are minor, but they’re there.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor Josh Brolin (1968) shares your birthday. You are a modern thinker and excellent at dealing with others. You have many interests, but you are particularly skilled at mediating and bringing others together. In part, this is because you know what makes people tick. It’s also because you’re not a quitter and others are inspired by your example. This year, a fresh new cycle begins for you. Open any door!

ER wait times have hit all-time highs in Winnipeg and are impacting nearly all aspects of hospital operations

Tom Brodbeck 17 minute read Friday, Aug. 21, 2026

On most days at Health Sciences Centre’s adult emergency department, all 58 treatment beds are filled with sick patients. Another dozen or so brought in by ambulance line the hallways on stretchers, with only one nurse to look after them.

Out in the waiting room, about 30 or 40 people — sometimes more — are slouched in chairs in pain or discomfort, waiting hours to see a doctor. Most have been assessed by a triage nurse, but many will have to wait 10 to 20 hours to be examined by a physician because there’s no room for them in the treatment area.

Some patients leave because they can no longer tolerate the excruciating wait, only to return days later, sicker than they were before.

Welcome to the emergency department at Manitoba’s largest hospital, where some of the highest-acuity patients seek medical care but now face delays that were unimaginable a few years ago.

The trolls inside the Conservative tent

The trolls inside the Conservative tent

David McLaughlin 5 minute read Yesterday at 2:00 AM CDT

The Conservative Party of Canada has a troll problem. And it’s coming from inside the tent.

Once, trolls existed only in imagination. They were figures of mythical proportion, big and small. They lived solitary lives under bridges, in caves, or forests. They were considered dim-witted and mean. Best avoided.

Today, they are real, unavoidable, and ubiquitous on social media. They are anything but solitary. There are tribes of them out there and tribal is how they think and post. As for dim-witted and mean, others can opine but they are uniformly mean and dismissive.

Mean to anyone who disagrees with their views. Dismissive of any view but their own. They distribute questionable, at best, facts and opinions grounded in hostility towards anything or anyone deemed disagreeable or heretical to their world view.

Swede leads Manitoba Open, Winnipegger sits 33rd

Mike McIntyre 5 minute read Yesterday at 6:53 PM CDT

From Lars-Erik Sjoberg to Thomas Steen to Viggo Bjorck, there’s no shortage of Swedish athletes who have quickly become fan favourites here in Winnipeg.

Daniel Svard is hoping to add his name to the growing list.

Although he wields a golf club and not a hockey stick, the 23-year-old from Stockholm is opening plenty of eyes this week at Elmhurst. He carries a two-shot lead into Sunday’s final round of the Manitoba Open, looking to close out his first professional victory in his just his fourth career tournament.

Svard fired a six-under 66 on Saturday to move to 14-under through 54 holes of the PGA Tour Americas event.
