MOON ALERT Briefly avoid shopping or making important decisions from 10 a.m. until 12:45 p.m. The new moon occurs in Gemini at 10:02 a.m. At 12:34 a.m. the moon moves from Gemini into Cancer.

ARIES (March 21-April 19)

Today’s new moon is one of the best days of the year to consider how well you communicate. Do you listen when others speak? Do others understand what you mean? According to research, only about half of our intended meaning is actually getting back and forth. (Please read this again.)

TAURUS (April 20-May 20)

Every new moon is an opportunity to make resolutions. The new moon this month is your chance to focus on earnings, possessions and your assets in general. What does your picture look like? What would you like it to look like? What can you do?

GEMINI (May 21-June 20)

The only new moon all year in your sign is taking place today, which makes it the perfect time to take a serious look in the mirror. Are you dated in your appearance? Do you look interesting and inviting to approach? Think about your image.

CANCER (June 21-July 22)

Your year ahead is going to be more spiritual, which is why it’s interesting that today’s new moon urges you to speculate on your spiritual values. For starters, what are they? Do you feel this way inclined?

LEO (July 23-Aug. 22)

Friendship is important to health, enjoyment of life and happiness. Today’s new moon urges you to give thought to your future dreams and how they can become a reality. It also urges you to consider the role friendship plays in your life.

VIRGO (Aug. 23-Sept. 22)

The new moon this month is at the top of your chart prompting you to consider the life direction in which you’re headed. For starters, are you going in the direction you want? Is it the direction you chose or someone else? Don’t drift along willy-nilly; think about where you are headed!

LIBRA (Sept. 23-Oct. 22)

What further education or training could you get to improve your job skills and enrich your life in general? To broaden your horizons, which would you prefer — signing up for a course or travelling somewhere? After all, you want to live every day you have left to you.

SCORPIO (Oct. 23-Nov. 21)

“I owe, I owe, it’s off to work I go.” Once a year the new moon urges you to give serious thought to your debt; that day has arrived. Figure out exactly how much you owe and how much you own. Get the picture. (Information is power.) What can you do to reduce this debt?

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 22-Dec. 21)

Today the new moon is opposite your sign, which means this is your chance (the only one all year) to think about how you can improve partnerships and your closest friendships. What are three things you might do?

CAPRICORN (Dec. 22-Jan. 19)

Each new moon is a chance to make a resolution and this month’s new moon is the only new moon all year that focuses on your relationships and your health. What can you do to improve either area? Or both?

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20-Feb. 18)

Today’s new moon is your best chance all year to think about how you balance play and work in your life. Do you enjoy flirtations? Do you enjoy hobbies or social get-togethers? Do you enjoy sports and playful times with children? Do you play?

PISCES (Feb. 19-March 20)

Use the energy of today’s new moon to think how you can improve your home and your relationships with family members. Every new moon is the perfect time to begin new activities or initiate a new outlook.

TODAY’S BIRTHDAY

Actor/comedian Jean Dujardin (1972) shares your birthday today. You are persuasive and always very involved with others. (You don’t take a back seat to anything.) You have a talent for motivating others and you can use this to bring about change. You are hard-working, but must guard against burnout. You are capable of enormous dedication and perseverance. In the year ahead, an important decision will rise. Choose wisely.

Buhler Versatile completes Atlas Group acquisition

Free Press staff 2 minute read 2:01 AM CDT

Winnipeg-based Buhler Versatile Inc. announced on Monday the completion of its acquisition of German construction machinery manufacturer Atlas Group.

The transaction was first announced in June and officially closed on Oct. 1, following the satisfaction of the required closing conditions. Financial terms of the deal will remain confidential, the company said in a news release. As part of the acquisition, more than 200 jobs at Atlas will be retained.

“The completion of this acquisition marks an important milestone for Buhler Versatile and our long-term growth strategy,” Zafer Ozbalaban, president of Buhler Versatile, said in the release. “Atlas brings an established European brand, valuable engineering expertise and a strong manufacturing heritage. Together, we have an opportunity to expand our capabilities, strengthen our international presence and build a more diversified equipment manufacturing business.”

The addition of Atlas broadens Buhler Versatile’s equipment portfolio beyond its agricultural equipment brand, expanding into construction and material handling equipment. It also strengthens the company’s European manufacturing presence, with Atlas continuing operations at its established locations, including Ganderkesee, Delmenhorst and Vechta in Germany, and Bradford, England.

Would Canada actually spy on Cuba?

Peter McKenna 5 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

The Globe and Mail recently ran a series of stories on how “Havana syndrome” negatively impacted a number of diplomats working at the Canadian embassy in Cuba. As of this writing, there has been unusual radio silence on the topic from Mark Carney’s governing Liberals.

The reportage also linked the so-called “sonic attacks” or what the Americans call “anomalous health incidents” (and the attendant concussion-like symptoms) to a Russian high-frequency microwave weapon. More importantly, the Globe maintained that Moscow’s retaliation against Canadian officials in Havana was because of their close co-operation with U.S. intelligence agencies in spying on the Cuban government.

Some of the articles claimed that high-tech satellite gear, which was brought into Cuba covertly by U.S. officials, was installed on the roofs of the residences of Canadian diplomats in Havana. Presumably, Canadian officials — or what are sometimes referred to as officers or agents working under the Global Security Reporting Program (GSRP) within the Department of Global Affairs — were using this satellite technology to collect intelligence on human sources in Cuba.

The secret information was eventually passed on to Canada’s partners in the so-called “Five Eyes” alliance (the U.S., Australia, Britain and New Zealand). It’s worth pointing out that this wouldn’t have been the first time Canadian officials in Cuba were funnelling sensitive intelligence to their U.S. counterparts.

Addressing homelessness and toxic drug use

Kate Kehler and Molly McCracken 5 minute read 2:00 AM CDT

Winnipeg is facing a housing and toxic drug crisis that is not going away. Every day, we see the consequences — people living without safe homes, encampments in neighbourhoods and public spaces, increasingly toxic drugs, overdoses and emergency services stretched to their limits.

These are symptoms of a deeper crisis of inter-generational trauma related to colonization of the original peoples of these lands, compounded by a crisis in housing, income security, mental health and addictions services and the availability of community based supports.

Winnipeg’s next city council must decide whether it is prepared to invest in solutions that address the root causes.

Weaving a Better Winnipeg: The Alternative Municipal Budget 2026, proposes a five-point action plan that would put housing, outreach, human rights and Indigenous leadership at the centre of Winnipeg’s response.
