WINNIPEG — A Winnipeg police cruiser car made a special delivery early yesterday when a dog gave birth to eight puppies in the back seat.
Police officers patrolling the area of Mountain Avenue and McPhillips Street at about 2:30 a.m. found two dogs wandering in traffic. To get them out of harm’s way, they had to coax them into the car. They bought some food at a local convenience store, and got the two dogs in the car. They were on their way to an animal shelter when they got a call for help concerning a man with a gun seen entering a house in the 800 block of Redwood Avenue.
The dogs stayed in the back of the vehicle for about four hours while the officers assisted other units.
When the police officers returned to their cruiser, they discovered the Labrador-Shepherd cross had given birth to eight puppies. She and her partner and the eight puppies were taken to Animal Services, where two more puppies were born.
The owner of the dogs was later located. He picked up both dogs and all 10 puppies after paying a fine for letting his dogs run loose.
