In the parlance of software developers and website coders, the Free Press is now ready for beta testing.

According to the thinking behind beta testing, the first, or alpha, stage of scrutiny of the newly designed winnipegfreepress.com has caught all the major bugs. What we now need is a group of test pilots to take over the controls, run the site through its paces and let us know about any remaining errors.

Since “beta testing” seems like something that would be limited to only those who like wearing plastic pocket protectors, I prefer the term “sneak preview.”

Try out beta.winnipegfreepress.com for a sneak preview of our new website.
Try out beta.winnipegfreepress.com for a sneak preview of our new website.

So, if we can all agree that sneak preview is beta, er, better, let’s see what that means for you.

Beginning today, anyone who wants to kick the tires of our new digital product and take it for a spin — whether it’s on your smartphone, desktop, laptop or tablet — can do so by browsing to beta.winnipegfreepress.com.

What you will see is a project that has been more than a year in the making: a complete rebuilding of our website from the ground up.

What you might NOT notice among the many bells and whistles we have built into this new product is the subtle personalization of your Free Press experience. The more you read, the more you’ll see the news that interests you.

And if you notice anything that doesn’t quite work right, we want you to let us know. Tell us about any problems at wfp.to/bugreport.

Want to take the new website for a ride but prefer the sidecar over the driver’s seat? We’re also holding a sneak preview event.

On Friday at our News Café, I’ll be joined by senior members of our digital team to explain what we have built, help guide you through its many features and answer any questions. The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. and will carry on for the rest of the lunch hour.

For anyone who can’t make it down to our News Café at 237 McDermot Ave., we will be livestreaming the party at winnipegfreepress.com.

Oh, and I will ensure there is lots of free coffee as our News Café is well past the beta-testing stage.
