❚ The Calgary Dinos got their revenge Saturday, earning a split in their Canada West women’s basketball games by defeating the Winnipeg Wesmen 87-81 in Calgary. The Wesmen won Friday, 81-79.

Caity Gooch led the Wesmen in scoring for the second consecutive night, finishing with 21 points, including a trio of three-pointers. Alex MacIver was solid with 13 points and nine rebounds.

Despite the loss, Wesmen head coach Tanya McKay was rather pleased with the effort of her team. “It was a tough loss, but the team played hard. A split on the road is good.”

In Friday’s game, Gooch led Winnipeg with 26 points, including four-three pointers. Gooch also added four steals and three assists. Amy Ogidan had 18 points and Mackenzie Prasek was next with 17.

The Wesmen men lost both weekend encounters with the Dinos. On Saturday they fell 96-55 and on Friday they lost 94-56.
Peter Lomuro was the top Wesman on Saturday with 16 points while Nick Lother added 14. On Friday, Lother had 24 points and Lomuro had 16.

The Wesmen and Dinos go at it again Friday and Saturday at the Duckworth Centre.

❚ The Manitoba Bisons rebounded Sunday by beating the Lethbridge Pronghorns 5-2 in Canada West women’s soccer action at the U of M Stadium. The Herd lost 2-1 to the Calgary Dinos on Saturday.

Paula Fast had a pair of goals for Manitoba on Sunday, with single markers coming from Lianna Bestvater, Caley Miskimmin and Meagan Smith.

Fast scored the Bisons only goal on Saturday, with Desiree Scott and Stephanie Rurak drawing assists.

❚ On a spooky Halloween night, the No. 4 ranked Manitoba Bisons women’s hockey team got a scare from the UBC Thunderbirds before rallying for a come-from-behind 2-1 shootout win in a Canada West encounter at Max Bell Arena.

With the victory, the Bisons moved their record to 4-2-0 for eight points and third place in the Canada West standings.

“I thought this was a character win for this team this early in the season,” said Bisons head coach Jon Rempel. “We stuck to our game plan, did not get frustrated and stayed patient.”

Tammy Brade tied the game in the second period and the 1-1 tie stood after regulation and sudden-death. Amy Coates and Nellie Minshull scored for Manitoba in the shootout.

“I am happy about the way we kept plugging away and came away with the win,” said Coates. “It was good to earn a home sweep this weekend.”

The Bisons won 5-2 Friday on two goals each by Addie Miles and Minshull and a single from Caitlin McDonald.

❚ After a humbling experience the night before, when they were handed their first regulation loss of the season, the No. 2-ranked University of Alberta Golden Bears survived a late scare from the No. 6-ranked Manitoba Bisons in Canada West men’s hockey action, securing a 5-3 victory in Edmonton. The Herd won Friday’s game 3-2.

The win puts 6-1-1 Alberta back into a tie for first place with 6-3-1 Manitoba. The Bears will have a chance to pass them next weekend when Manitoba has the bye.

The Bisons got goals from Tyler Dittmer, Mike Hellyer and Ian Duval. Goal scorers on Friday were Calin Wild with a pair and Dittmer.

❚ The Manitoba Bisons football team prepared for next week’s Canada West playoffs with a 31-28 win over Simon Fraser Saturday at University Stadium.

The Bisons got touchdowns from Stu Schollaardt, Matt Henry and an interception major from Thomas Hall.

Manitoba finished the season in third place at 4-4 and will travel to Calgary Saturday for the Canada West semifinal.
