Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 07/09/2011 (5232 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
A pair of touchdowns, one rushing and the other via the pass, by University of Manitoba Bisons’ Anthony Coombs caught the eye of the Canada West Athletic’s player of the week voting panel, despite the Bisons losing a close home opener 35-31 to the Univrsity of Calgary Dinos on Saturday.
Named the CWA offensive player of the week, the rookie running back and kick returner who was playing in his first CIS game also tied a team record for longest reception (90 yards) for a touchdown. He was also the team’s leading rusher with 62 yards on 15 carries, including a six-yard major on the first possession of the game and notched a game-high 101 reception yards on three catches.
In addition, Coombs had 51 kickoff return yards on nine attempts.
Rifles earn honours
THE honours keep coming for Winnipeg Rifles quarterback Ryan Marsch, but this week the junior football club’s Donovan Gregoire and Dayton White also got into the act. The trio was named Tuesday by the Prairie Football Conference as its’ offensive, defensive and special teams players of the week respectively.
Marsch, who was also last week’s PFC player of the week and the Canadian Junior Football League’s player of the week, went on a tear again Sunday, setting club and conference records with seven touchdown passes in the Rifles’ 54-13 victory over the Edmonton Wildcats. He completed 24 of 32 passes for 392 yards.
A rookie linebacker, Gregoire accounted for nine solo tackles, one assisted tackle and an interception, while White made three special teams tackles in Sunday’s game.
Gilmour at sledge camp
WINNIPEG defenceman Sean Gilmour will be among the 30 players invited to take part in Canada’s national sledge hockey team selection camp, Sept. 7-11 in Barrie, Ont.
The final 16-player roster will be named on Sept. 11 and they will represent Canada at the 2011 World Sledge Hockey Challenge Nov. 27-Dec. 3 in Calgary, as well as the 2012 IPC Sledge Hockey World Championship this March in Hamar, Norway.
“The talented players we have invited to camp are a testament to the continued growth of sledge hockey in Canada,” said head coach Mike Mondin in a press release. “It is going to be an exciting camp. We are looking forward to getting on the ice and starting a new season.”
Rowers medal at worlds
WINNIPEG Rowing Club members Janine Hanson and Meghan Montgomery along with their respective crews, each won a silver medal for Canada over the weekend at the world rowing championships in Bled, Slovenia.
In addition, WRC alumnus in 2004, Stesha Carle, rowed with the United States team and won a silver medal in the women’s quad. Hanson, in the women’s eight, finished second behind the U.S., while Montgomery and her adaptive mixed four crew finished second behind Great Britain.
In addition to the medals, Hanson’s crew qualified their boat for the 2012 Olympics in London, while Montgomery’s crew qualified their boat for the 2012 Paralympics.
Also from the WRC, Kevin Kowalyk captured first in the men’s four B final, finishing 7th overall, and qualifying their boat for the 2012 Olympics, while WRC alumnus Emily Cameron raced in the women’s double, winning the C final, for 13th overall.
