AS first-career goal mob scenes go, it was lacking. But Adam Lowry’s Winnipeg Jets teammates more than made up for it Tuesday after he scored his first National Hockey League goal.

Lowry tipped home a Grant Clitsome point shot early in the 3-1 win over the Carolina Hurricanes for his first goal, but no one went to him in celebration after the red light flashed — the thinking being either the blast from the point had beaten Anton Khudobin or Michael Frolik had got his stick on it.

“I kind of went off on my own and celebrated a little bit while everyone went to Grant,” said a beaming Lowry afterward. “And then I was a little worried because I wasn’t sure it was going to be a high stick or not, so I tried to stay a little subdued. And the guys from the bench realized I had gotten a stick on it and were calling over for the puck.

“When they announced it was my goal I was pretty excited.”

Lowry’s game has been multi-layered since the Jets first announced the 21-year-old rookie had cracked the lineup out of training camp. He’s played both left wing and centre, has been defensively sound, has used his 6-5 frame to finish check and goes to the greasy areas in front of the net.

He’s looked comfortable at both forward spots, but has really settled in centring a line featuring T.J. Galiardi and Frolik.

“His two games at centre have been really strong,” said Jets coach Paul Maurice. “But you don’t want a young player to go too long his first year not scoring. It’s important for those guys to get something going early in the season so they feel like they can produce.”

Lowry’s girlfriend was in the crowd and he said he planned to keep the souvenir puck in his room. One other suggestion, from Clitsome, who was happy to be a part of Lowry’s first:

“It’s too bad we didn’t know right off the hop (it was his goal),” said Clitsome. “I told him he better put the game sheet over his bed and think of me all the time.”
