Don’t count Demski out just yet

Joshua Frey-Sam 6 minute read Tuesday, Oct. 14, 2025

Call it Nic Demski watch week.

The Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ star receiver is undoubtedly the player under the most watchful of eyes in the penultimate week of the regular season, as he recovers from a hamstring injury that he suffered in the club’s 25-20 road loss against the Edmonton Elks last weekend.

Demski, who was listed as a game-time decision while he awaited the birth of his son, pulled up lame on a deep route in the second quarter, grabbing at the back of his leg, and did not return to the contest.

Sitting the homegrown 10-year pro for the remainder of the game appeared to be more than a precautionary measure by the club, as Demski did not practise on Tuesday, which leaves his status for Friday’s critical matchup against the Saskatchewan Roughriders at Princess Auto Stadium (7 p.m.) in question.

Bombers serve up a Dickens of a disaster in failing to clinch a playoff berth

EDMONTON — You never know what you’re going to get with these Winnipeg Blue Bombers.

One minute they’re world-beaters, the next they’re a dysfunctional mess — especially on offence.

It was the latter Saturday night in Edmonton with the Bombers disappointing in a 25-20 loss to the Elks at Commonwealth Stadium.

The score is rather generous considering how poorly the Blue and Gold looked.

Jeff Malott is willing to do whatever it takes to stick around after making an NHL roster out of training camp for the first time in his career.

Score a goal? You bet. His first big-league tally — at least one that counted — came Wednesday night against the Vegas Golden Knights in a road win by his Los Angeles Kings.

Drop the gloves? No problem there, either. Malott did that in Tuesday’s season opener in Denver, going toe-to-toe with Colorado Avalanche defenceman Josh Manson. He followed it up Saturday afternoon with another bout, this time against Winnipeg Jets blue-liner Luke Schenn at Canada Life Centre.

“Just looking to have an impact,” is how Malott described it in a post-game chat with the Free Press following a hard-fought 3-2 loss to the Jets.

Assiniboia Downs bettors put their money where their mount is

George Williams 6 minute read Friday, Oct. 10, 2025

You could tell Assiniboia Downs was having a great season by the size of the wagering pools and the constantly growing crowds, but we certainly didn’t expect them to shatter their previous wagering record by a whopping $12 million.

Fans wagered an unprecedented total of $75.2 million on the live racing this season, which ended Wednesday, bettering the previous mark of $63.2 million set in 2020. Average wagering per card was $1.5 million, and wagering was up 21.16 per cent over the previous season.

One of the major reasons for the increase in wagering was the track’s strategic move over the past few years to reduce all takeouts on wagers to below 20 per cent, something that is very rare at North American tracks for obvious reasons, but it results in higher payoffs and puts more money back in the pockets of bettors.

The reduced takeout was a long-term play, and it absolutely worked. Kudos to Assiniboia Downs CEO Darren Dunn, VP of Finance and Gaming Sharon Gulyas and their management team for thinking well ahead of the curve. All the staff deserve a pat on the back this year for their excellent customer service, both on the betting side and in the food and beverage area. The nightly prime rib buffet was almost always sold out, and the newly minted Girls Night Out on Wednesday evenings turned out to be a huge hit among the ladies, with fancy hats and outfits everywhere.

New Winnipeg Jets season brings new game-day attire choices, goal songs

Mike McIntyre and Ken Wiebe 9 minute read Friday, Oct. 10, 2025

As Morgan Barron prepared for Thursday’s Winnipeg Jets season opener, a surprising thought crossed his mind.

“What should I wear?”

In the past, that decision was simple: suit and tie, no questions asked. It was the National Hockey League way — a long-standing dress code that left little room for interpretation.

But thanks to a new collective bargaining agreement struck this summer between the league and the union, players now have far more creative freedom when it comes to game-day attire.

Ever-growing player stress injuries point to only one remedy — less football

Jerrad Peters 5 minute read Friday, Oct. 10, 2025

Anyone seen Cole Palmer lately? How about Exequiel Palacios? At least Ousmane Dembélé, surely?

If not, it’s likely because the Chelsea, Bayer Leverkusen and Paris Saint-Germain players, who represent England, Argentina and France, respectively, are currently out injured.

Now, they’ve not suffered broken bones, major ligament damage or concussions. Their injuries were not sustained in tackles, knee-on-knees or any other sort of on-field clashes. No, they picked up their knocks over time — time they spent playing too much football without adequate rest and recovery.

They have stress injuries, and they’re not alone.

Curling Canada looks to turn Olympic buzz into new brooms on the ice

Donna Spencer, The Canadian Press 4 minute read Thursday, Oct. 9, 2025

The largest audience for curling happens every four years, but in a window when Canadian clubs are four to five weeks from closing for the season.

Curling Canada is urging clubs across the country to capitalize on the Olympic bump with a "Grow The Game" campaign.

The organization hopes that the 2026 Olympic Games in Milan and Cortina, Italy, which run Feb. 6-23, will get more people wanting to try the sport at that time.

Hosting Olympic curling watch parties or open houses, or learn to curl sessions, while people are feeling the buzz of watching the sport at its highest level, are some suggested options.

CFL West still wide open, Argos and Redblacks officially playing for pride

Jeff Hamilton 7 minute read Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2025

With the Toronto Argonauts and Ottawa Redblacks officially eliminated from the playoffs, we can start talking about a crossover to the East Division.

A West Division club moving over to the East has felt inevitable for the last few weeks, but confirmation came this past weekend after both clubs suffered another loss in their struggling seasons. The focus now shifts to a four-team race for top spot in the West, with the farthest team in the standings relegated to the East.

I wrote last week I anticipated the Saskatchewan Roughriders (11-4) holding onto top spot, their grip on first place tightening with a 20-13 win over the Redblacks on Friday. Assuming the Riders don’t choke, that leaves the B.C. Lions (9-7), Calgary Stampeders (8-7) and Winnipeg Blue Bombers (8-7) battling it out for the final three spots.

A lot of people are predicting the Lions for second place and the argument is sound. Quarterback Nathan Rourke is leading a confident Buck Pierce-led offence and the defence has finally been able to get to the quarterback, as the Lions ride the momentum of a four-game winning streak.

No one has ever mistaken the Winnipeg Blue Bombers’ locker room for a fashion runway.

If anything, it’s the type of place where the fashion police would hand out citations left, right and centre to players for wearing flip flops, baggy gym shorts and compression shirts with the sleeves chopped off.

“We wear sweats to the game and we wear sweats when we travel. Everything’s actually really laid back here, which I think I kinda appreciate,” said first-year Bombers defensive end James Vaughters after Wednesday’s closed practice.

“It’s gotten so big in the NFL with the tunnel fits and travel fits and everything. I was into it, but being at the point of my career where I’m at, I just want to win and play well. I appreciate the focus that they have here.”

Interest in women’s sports is growing. Here’s how some women-owned companies are responding

Anne M. Peterson, The Associated Press 7 minute read Tuesday, Oct. 7, 2025

Laura Youngson didn't expect to focus so much on soccer cleats when she organized a group of women to climb Mount Kilimanjaro and play a high-altitude match.

The point of the 2017 game was to highlight inequality in sports for women and girls. On that front, Youngson achieved her goal with the match becoming the subject of a documentary and landing the group in the Guinness Book of World Records.

Still, something bothered Youngson as the match unfolded. Glancing at the athletes' feet, she was struck that all the women were wearing men's or boy's soccer cleats instead of gear that was designed specifically for them. The realization led her to launch IDA Sports, which makes soccer cleats for the unique athletic needs of women.

“There was this real commercial gap for performance footwear for women,” said Youngson, whose IDA cleats are worn by players including Washington Spirit midfielder Courtney Brown. "As the game is growing, we’re in this moment when everything’s professionalizing, but the footwear wasn’t really keeping pace, so I wanted to go and change that.”

Clearing waivers might be best for defenceman Heinola’s development, club

It appears Winnipeg’s longest-running sports soap opera isn’t ready to go off the air — er, ice — just yet.

The latest plot twist in the Ville Heinola saga came Monday, when 31 NHL general managers essentially said, “Nah, we’re good,” after being given the chance to land the talented but rarely used young defenceman for free.

Heinola clearing waivers was no doubt a surprise to plenty of fans who believe the Jets have held the smooth-skating 24-year-old Finn back from bigger opportunities.

A fresh start will have to wait, at least for now. Heinola will remain with the organization that drafted him 20th overall in 2019 but has only dressed him for 53 NHL games so far.
