Hey there, time traveller!
This article was published 31/08/2010 (5546 days ago), so information in it may no longer be current.
One man’s totally subjective rankings after nine weeks of play (last week’s rank in parentheses):
1. (1) CALGARY STAMPEDERS (7-1) — Some brain cramps in the win over B.C., but still the best squad in the land.
2. (3) MONTREAL ALOUETTES (6-2) — About to find out what life is like without Anthony Calvillo… for one week, at least.
3. (2) SASKATCHEWAN ROUGHRIDERS (5-3) — An atrocious offensive performance in Edmonton has raised some concerns.
4. (4) HAMILTON TIGER-CATS (4-4) — A chance to make a real move in the division with a doubleheader coming up against the Argos.
5. (5) TORONTO ARGONAUTS (5-3) — About to be either exposed by the Ticats or have their rebirth legitimized.
6. (6) WINNIPEG BLUE BOMBERS (2-6) — Must get healthy and must stop the bleeding of a four-game skid ASAP.
7. (8) EDMONTON ESKIMOS (2-6) — Huge — we mean HUGE — victory over the Riders keeps their season alive.
8. (7) B.C. LIONS (1-7) — Hard to imagine a Buono side looking this lost. But they’d need a compass and a small miracle just to get back to .500.
JUICY NUMBERS
10,515
This gem brought to you by Mike Beamish of the Vancouver Sun — it’s been 10,515 days since the Lions won a football game at Empire Stadium/Field, dating back to November 1982.
FYI
A milestone worth acknowledging: Bud Steen officiated his 500th CFL game on the weekend. And while that’s an impressive number, you can bet he heard his name taken in vain in every single one of those contests… The Lions are 0-4 in their temporary home at Empire Field and 0-9 vs. John Hufnagel. B.C. is also off to one of its worst starts in franchise history. The Lions opened 1958 with an 0-10 record and stumbled to a 1-10 start in 1969… Worth noting: Chris Leak will step in to replace Anthony Calvillo at the controls of the Alouettes offence. It will be the former Florida star’s first CFL start and first since Jan. 8, 2007, when he led the Gators to a 41-14 win over Ohio State for the NCAA title… It’s about those sideline signs that B.C. receiver Darius Passmore crashed into Friday — it says here the CFL is lucky the injury wasn’t worse. It should insist each team do more so the exposed edges don’t do more damage next time, because there will be a next time… CFL/NFL legend Warren Moon has indicated he’d be open to the GM job with the Eskimos. Obviously he’d be big on name power, but would he be the right fit?
SAY WHAT?!
"I’m happy that they drove all the way from Saskatchewan and paid three times to fill up their tank, that’s great!"
— Eskimos DE Kai Ellis on winning in front of their faithful and thousands of Rider fans who had travelled to Edmonton.
