REGINA — Obby Khan doesn’t ask for much in life. Good health. Happiness. A spot in the middle of the Winnipeg Blue Bomber offensive line.

But once — just once — he’d love to watch the clock at Taylor Field click down to 00:00 and see the Bombers ahead of the Saskatchewan Roughriders on the scoreboard.

And, so far, he’s 0-4 in Labour Day Classics.

“I want to win this game more than anything because I haven’t won a Labour Day yet,” said Khan Saturday upon the team’s arrival in enemy territory. “And I think this is the best chance I’ve had in five years to beat them.

“It’s one of those things in life… players obviously talk about winning a Grey Cup, about being an all-star and having all the accolades. But, I want to win a Labour Day Game… along with all those other things.”

HEFNEY WATCH

The Detroit Lions made their final cuts Saturday afternoon and among them was Jonathan Hefney, last year’s East Division top rookie while working in the secondary for the Bombers.

Hefney may yet be added to the Lions practice roster or garner interest from another NFL team, but should he not the Bombers would obviously welcome him back with wide-open arms. He has 10 days to have his situation in the NFL updated — the PR or another opportunity — before he’d have to come back to Winnipeg.

“We will certainly be monitoring the 10 days and would certainly look forward to his possible return,” said Bomber assistant GM Ross Hodgkinson.

Playing the difficult defensive halfback spot as a true rookie last year, Hefney finished the season with 66 tackles and four interceptions and parlayed that into a tryout with the Lions.

Meanwhile, the Bombers continue to be in discussion with the agent for wide receiver Titus Ryan, cut last month by the Dallas Cowboys. He is an option-year player who headed south with one year remaining on his current deal with the Bombers, meaning his rights automatically revert back to Winnipeg.
