Jennifer JONES stumbled on opening day Friday of the $60,000 Manitoba Lotteries Women’s Curling Classic, surrendering steals in four of eight ends to fall 6-4 to Barb Spencer Friday night.
Winnipeg’s Jones, the three-time defending Canadian champion, gave up single steals in the second, third, seventh and eighth ends to Spencer and was only in the game at all thanks to a steal of three of her own in the fifth end.
The loss dropped Jones to the B side, where she’ll face Winnipeg’s Holly Scott today.
Spencer advanced to an A-side semi-final against Alberta’s Renee Sonnenberg. Other A-side semifinalists today include B.C.’s Kelly Scott and Saskatchewan’s Stefanie Lawton.
Cathy Overton-Clapham, who is debuting a new team locally this weekend, defeated Winnipeg’s Lisa Blixhaven in her first game and was back on the ice at press time Friday night playing Edmonton’s Heather Nedohin.
Winnipeg’s Brette Richards and Shauna Streich, U.S.A.’s Allison Pottinger and Ontario’s Rachel Homan all went 0-2 on opening day and are facing elimination this afternoon.
At the $58,000 Canad Inns Prairie Classic in Portage La Prairie, Ontario’s Glenn Howard, China’s Xiaoming Xu, Russia’s Jason Gunnlaugson and Brandon’s Terry McNamee were all 2-0 on opening day and will play in A-side semi-finals today.
Former Brier champions Vic Peters and Jeff Stoughton won their opening games and were back on the ice late last night. Portage’s Ryan Hyde, Winnipeg’s Andy Stewart, U.S.A.’s John Benton and B.C.’s Jeff Richard were all 0-2 and are facing elimination today.
