WINNIPEG — Winnipeg’s Chelsea Carey defeated Cathy Overton-Clapham 7-3 at Fort Rouge Curling Club Monday night to capture the $15,000 first prize at the Manitoba Lotteries Womens Curling Classic.
Carey broke open a 4-3 game with a three-ender in the seventh end and then ran Overton-Clapham out of rocks in the eighth. Overton-Clapham settles for a second place prize of $10,000.
With the victory, Carey also earns a berth into the Canada Cup bonspiel in Medicine Hat, Alta., Nov. 30-Dec. 5.
Meanwhile, Winnipeg’s Mike McEwen beat defending Manitoba men’s champion Jeff Stoughton 6-3 Monday night in Portage La Prairie to earn his team the $18,000 first prize at the Canad Inns Prairie Classic. Stoughton settled for $10,000 in what was a rematch of the 2010 Manitoba men’s final, won by Stoughton.
Both Carey and McEwen went undefeated to win their respective events.
