BITTER PILL: THE BENEFIT CONCERT FOR BILL MERRITT
Friday, Winnipeg Convention Centre. Former Mood Jga Jga bassist and all-around good guy Bill Merritt is undergoing chemotherapy to deal with an inoperable brain tumour. With the bills piling up, his friends in the music community have banded together to help out by throwing a fundraising show featuring Be Bop Beluga, the Bobcats, the Duhks, Graham Shaw & the Sincere Serenaders, Fabulous George & the Zodiacs, Rocki Rolletti, Swingsoniq and Mood Jga Jga. Tickets are $20 at Ticketmaster.
LES SEXY
Friday, The Cavern. After two years honing their chops live, local Franco-punk quartet Les Sexy releases its self-titled CD, which features 10 songs in 30 minutes, just as a good punk-rock album should. Admission is $5.
LES JUPES
Saturday, Plug In Institute of Contemporary Art Despite their French name, Les Jupes is made up of three Anglos — scene vets Mike Petkau Falk, David Schellenberg and Kelly Beaton — who will release their debut album, Modern Myths, at Plug In’s new space, a suitable location considering the band’s mixture of post-punk, pop-rock and goth anchored by Falk’s distinctive baritone. Tickets are $12 at Music Trader, Into the Music and Ticketworkshop.
JOE STRUMMER AND THE CLASH TRIBUTE
Saturday, West End Cultural Centre. The sixth annual tribute to the late Joe Strummer and the Clash features the Farrell Bros., Kids on Fire and the Stiff Bishops. The show also doubles as a fundraiser for Solidarity Rock, an initiative to send music instruments to Cuban musicians. This year Kids on Fire will travel to the country in March for the organization’s fourth expedition. Tickets are $10 at Music Trader.
